In the simplest implementation, a continuous wave (constant output) laser beam may be blocked or transmitted on demand, with a variable level of transmission. <\/p>\n\n<p>The two most widely used technologies for this purpose are the acousto-optic modulator (AOM) and the electro-optic modulator (EOM). <\/p>\n\n<p>The AOM contains a transparent crystal with an attached piezoelectric transducer. Applying a radio frequency signal to the transducer produces a sound (or acoustic) wave within the crystal. This, in turn, creates a periodic variation in the material\u2019s refractive index which makes it act like a diffraction grating. Varying the input signal changes the amplitude of the acoustic waves. This causes more or less of the light to be diffracted out of the main beam and into the diffracted orders. This is how modulation is achieved.<\/p>\n\n<p>The EOM utilizes an electro-optic crystal. This is a material that rotates the polarization plane of input linearly polarized laser light when a voltage is applied to it. By putting a linear polarizer at the output end of the crystal, beam modulation is achieved when the applied voltage is varied.<\/p>\n\n<p>There are differences in nearly all the operating and practical characteristics of AOMs and EOMs. This makes each technology best suited for certain specific uses. Some of the key parameters relevant to high-throughput materials processing include:<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-9d6595d7 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:100%\">\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><b>High-Power Operation<\/b><\/td><td>EOMs can work with higher power laser beams because of increased bulk material thermal stability and a more robust cooling configuration. <\/td><\/tr><tr><td>Risetime<\/td><td>This is how fast a modulator can go from completely blocking a beam to totally transmitting it. EOMs can have as much as 20X faster risetimes than AOMs.<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><b>Modulation Frequency<\/b><\/td><td>This refers to how fast the modulator can be switched on and off. AOMs typically require much lower voltages to modulate the beam, making it easier to support high modulation rates. The maximum modulation frequency of an EOM is controlled by state-of-the art high-voltage switching technology. <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n<p>If may seem confusing that EOMs can have faster risetimes but lower modulation speeds than AOMs. The figure provides the definitions of these terms and should help clarify this.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1900\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/apellaser.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/risetime-falltime-modulation-speed.jpg\" alt=\"Definitions of the main output parameters for a modulator. Vias are tiny holes made in printed circuit boards (PCBs) that allow electrical connections to be made between their different layers.<\/p>\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1900\" height=\"1140\" src=\"https:\/\/apellaser.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/circuit-board-via-drilling.jpg\" alt=\"circuit-board-via-drilling\" class=\"wp-image-26747\" srcset=\"https:\/\/apellaser.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/circuit-board-via-drilling.jpg 1900w, https:\/\/apellaser.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/circuit-board-via-drilling-400x240.jpg 400w, https:\/\/apellaser.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/circuit-board-via-drilling-1300x780.jpg 1300w, https:\/\/apellaser.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/circuit-board-via-drilling-768x461.jpg 768w, https:\/\/apellaser.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/circuit-board-via-drilling-1536x922.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/apellaser.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/circuit-board-via-drilling-1200x720.jpg 1200w, https:\/\/apellaser.ro\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/circuit-board-via-drilling-150x90.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1900px) 100vw, 1900px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n<p>PCB boards are shrinking to accommodate greater device miniaturization. This is especially true for devices like smartphones, 5G transceivers, and wearables. These more highly miniaturized devices often employ advanced packaging techniques \u2013 such as high-density interconnect (HDI) PCBs and IC substrates. The vias required for these are much smaller than can be achieved with traditional methods, but lasers excel at making the smaller holes needed for these newer electronic package types. <\/p>\n\n<p>CO\u2082 lasers are widely used in commercial via drilling systems because they provide highly efficient processing of the materials used in many electronics packages, such as FR4, PTFE, glass-woven composites, and ceramics. And they can even ablate copper traces.  CO\u2082 lasers can drill vias down to about 30 \u00b5m in diameter. Using AOMs, these systems can operate at speeds of over 5,000 vias\/second. While that may sound amazing, electronics manufacturers want to go even faster. &#13;\nThe reason for this is simple. Increased throughput means reduced cost. <\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><h3>Increasing Via Drilling Throughput<\/h3><\/h3>\n\n<p>A typical high-speed via drilling system splits the laser beam into as many as four separate beams. This provides four times higher overall throughput than just using a single beam. <\/p>\n\n<p>Splitting the beam into even more separate beams could further increase speed. But splitting the beam also divides the laser power amongst them. And it takes a certain amount of power in each individual beam to perform drilling.<\/p>\n\n<p>The obvious solution is to increase the laser power. And this is where the AOMs used in most CO\u2082 laser via drilling systems becomes the limitation. Because AOMs simply can\u2019t work with CO\u2082 lasers over about 300 W in power. And dividing a 300 W beam up more than four times doesn\u2019t provide enough power in each beam for the drilling process. <\/p>\n\n<p>A 1 kW CO\u2082 laser would supply sufficient power to divide the beam multiple times and get the throughput increase that semiconductor manufacturers require. But it would take a modulator that can handle about 1 kW of CO\u2082 laser power for this approach to work. Since there hasn\u2019t been an AOM modulator available that could do that, Coherent turned to EOM technology for our\u00a0<a title=\"EO modulators\" href=\"https:\/\/apellaser.ro\/en\/product\/electro-optic-switch-coherent\/\" target=\"_self\">CO\u2082 laser electro-optic switch<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><h3>Modulators for Every Application<\/h3><\/h3>\n\n<p>AOMs and EOMs each have their uses. This is why Coherent offers lower power (&lt;50 W) CO\u2082 lasers, like our\u00a0<a title=\"diamond C-CX series\" href=\"https:\/\/apellaser.ro\/en\/product\/diamond-c-cx-series-lasers-coherent\/\" target=\"_self\">DIAMOND Cx-10<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"diamond C-CX series\" href=\"https:\/\/www.coherent.com\/lasers\/co2\/diamond-c-cx-series.html\" target=\"_self\">DIAMOND Cx-10LDE+<\/a> that directly integrate an AOM. These service applications that don\u2019t require extraordinarily high throughput levels, or which are more cost-sensitive.<\/p>\n\n<p>And now, our\u00a0CO\u2082 laser electro-optic switch\u00a0enables system builders to support applications that require both very high throughput as well as high-powered (up to 1000 W) lasers.
